Obituary for Thomas Elbert

Thomas Henry Elbert, 94, of Ames, died at the Israel Family Hospice House on July 27, 2018. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 9:00 am until 10:30 am with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames.

Thomas was born November 21, 1923 in Whittemore to John J. and Cecilia (Priester) Elbert. He attended Presentation Academy in Whittemore and graduated from Ames High School in 1941.He attended Iowa State University for a year and then enlisted in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. He married Eleanor Finnessy on October 27, 1948. Returning from WW II, he joined the United States Postal Service where he was employed for nearly 42 years, retiring in 1985.

Tom was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and was very devoted to his Catholic faith. He was passionate about farming and enjoyed playing bridge, woodworking, singing, square dancing, and gardening. He loved animals and ISU sports and activities.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Elbert, and her children, Peter Benson and Nora Benson; son, John (Sally) Elbert, and their children, T.J. Elbert, Michael Elbert, Christie Doe, and Shannon Johnson; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife; son-in-law, Jeff Benson; and siblings, S. John Elbert, Bill Elbert, Marjorie Roberts, and Mary Shafer.
