Obituary for Joe Beeman

Joe Beeman, 89, of Ames, died Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home with a visitation beginning at 9 a.m.
Joe Clair Beeman was born in Maxwell on Dec. 2, 1929. He was a 1948 graduate of Ames High School and a longtime resident of Ames. Though he did not attend Iowa State University, he was something of an honorary grad, cheering heartily for his beloved Cyclones.Among his last words was “Hoiberg” when The Mayor’s image appeared on TV.

Joe married Bev Cowan on Valentine’s Day, 1951. They lived at various places in Ames, but for most of their marriage they lived near Roosevelt Elementary School. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was named Izaak Walton League Sportsman of the Year in 2010. He greatly enjoyed teaching his boys to hunt and fish, including proper casting techniques. He helpfully noted, repeatedly, that “you can’t catch a fish if your line isn’t in the water.” Joe also was a national top 100 ranked trap and skeet shooter and successful league bowler.

Joe was a proud member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 33. He took great pride in his construction work, pointing out the many major buildings on which he worked, including at ISU. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

At home, he could fix anything, including his beloved Chevy vehicles.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Carey, his step-father, F.T. Carey, his father, Gerald Beeman, and his brother, Robert Beeman of La Palma, Calif. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bev (Cowan) Beeman; sons Gary (Linda); Mark (Marsha); Perry (Mary); and Brad (Denise); half sister, Jeri Jacobsen;16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Napier United Methodist Church, the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Lung Association.
