Lloyd was born June 14, 1951 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Carl Edward and Myrtle (Clark) Nyhus. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls and it was there that he met the girl who would become his wife, Janice Y. McCoy. They married on June 20, 1970 and during the next six years added three wonderful children to their family: Sheila, Jared & Angela. In 1977 the family moved to Cortez, Colorado but stayed only 3 years. Knowing they needed to be back near family, in 1980 they moved to Iowa, a state where Lloyd had originally vowed to Jan that he would never, ever live. Iowa was his home for 39 years. Lloyd had just celebrated his 68th birthday and their 49th wedding anniversary just before his passing.
The real joy of Lloyd’s life was his grandchildren, each of them held a very special place in his heart. Until his health took its toll, he loved to attend their band concerts, vocal concerts, school programs, wrestling, baseball, basketball and football games. He even got to see a few of his granddaughters’ soccer games in KC. He always regretted not being able to go to more of his granddaughters’ events. Lloyd was so proud of the fine young men and women that each of them had become. He loved seeing their Facebook and Instagram posts.
Lloyd also loved getting together with his coffee group in Ames and going out to eat with his wonderful friends.
His hobbies were raising pigeons and gardening. Little did Jan know when they married that pigeons would become an integral part of their lives, and they would have more flowers than she could imagine. Lloyd was a Life Member of the Iowa State Pigeon Association, spending many years helping the club put on their premier annual show each December in Des Moines. He was also a member of the Central Fantail Club and the Mid-American Fantail Club.
From the mid-80’s well into the 90’s Lloyd was a framing and finish subcontractor working under Friedrich Construction. He built many beautiful homes in the Ames and surrounding area. In the mid-90’s he switched to siding installation and subcontracted under Ames Home Improvement until his health would no longer allow him to continue. In 2008 he went onto disability.
Lloyd was a member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley.
The final months of his life were spent between the Madrid home and Mary Greeley Medical Center. The Family would like to thank all the nurses and personnel who took care of Lloyd these past few months.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Janice, of Huxley, IA; his children: Sheila (Thomas) Heinen of Huxley, Jared (Vanessa) Nyhus of Prairie Village, KS, and Angela (Rodney) Spaid of Huxley; six grandchildren: Tyler Nyhus-Nelson, Brant Spaid, Garret Heinen, Alexis Nyhus, Abigail Nyhus and Cole Heinen; three brothers: Alan, Kevin, and Todd Nyhus all of Sioux Falls, SD; his beloved Aunt Barb Clark of Lakeland, MN; his mother-in-law, Delphia McCoy of Huxley; and his little dog, Crickett.
Lloyd was preceded in death by both of his parents, his baby sister Patricia Nyhus, his grandparents, his step-mother Viola Nyhus, his brother Loren Nyhus, his beloved Uncle Kenneth Clark, his Father-in-Law, Marion McCoy, and many other aunts & uncles.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Diabetes Foundation, Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, or the family.
