Robert Winfield Williams was born in Waupun, Wisconsin on August 23, 1924 to Chester and Jennie (Pinkerton) Williams. Bob grew up on the family dairy farm, attending country school at Woodhull through the eighth grade and graduating from Fond du Lac High School in 1942. He first learned to milk a cow by holding a kitchen kettle between his knees because he wasn’t big enough yet to hold a milk pail. He purchased his first car, a 1929 Model A for $47.50 and began driving on a permit at the age of 14. In high school, he put many miles on his second car, traveling around the county with friends to dance to the music of Big Bands. Bob served our country with the Army Occupation Forces in Germany from 1945 - 1946. As the best man at his friend’s wedding, Bob met a young bridesmaid, Pauline Gibbs from Ames, Iowa he took a shining to. On August 29, 1948, they were united in marriage at First United Methodist Church in Ames. They lived in Fond du Lac, WI for one year, before moving to Ames with their infant son, David. Bob learned the plumbing trade from his father-in-law and was a plumber-pipefitter until his retirement. He then worked part time at Ace Hardware, doing repairs for a number of years. Bob has been a resident of Ames since 1949.
As an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Bob served as Trustee. He was also a member of Lions Club International, first in Huxley and later in Gilbert, and served on the Gilbert Community School Board when his children attended school there. Bob and his wife Pauline were members of Triple G Square Dance Club, longtime members of Iowa-Yucatan Partners of the Americas, and helped found the Merida English Language Library in Merida, Yucatan.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Jeannine (Rick) Massengale of Newnan, GA. and Nancy (Gus) Brinkman of Rolfe, IA., 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Pauline, son David, daughter-in-law Sue, infant son Steven Thomas, his parents, brother Donald and sister-in-law Adelaide, brother Chester, and sisters Helen and Sue Williams.
