Obituary for Vernon C Thoreson

Vernon Curtis Thoreson of rural Ellsworth left this life for his Heavenly home November 1, 2018, on what would have been his mother’s 101st birthday. Born July 27, 1954, to Curtis O. and Beryle L. Twedt Thoreson, Vern was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church where he married Lori Caruth on January 3, 1998.
Vern grew up a farmer. From his earliest days, Vern spent most of his time farming, first with his many toy implements in the big sandpile by the barn and later with the esteemed big “Red” equipment.
Vern graduated from South Hamilton Community Schools. As a teen his interests were varied: he played some sports and enjoyed music, especially his Mustard Seeds youth singing group. But his real interests were snowmobiles and later stock cars -- and racing snowmobiles and stock cars.
After attending Iowa State University, Vern returned to Ellsworth to drive truck and then to farm with his dad and Uncle Ike, later taking on the farm operation on his own. For many years Vern served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He was always willing to help out neighbors with machinery and help out young racers with their cars. His hobby of custom painting focused mainly on cars and other vehicles except for the time that he found himself painting cartoon characters on a rocking chair for one of his nieces.
To his nephews and nieces, Vern was the Uncle Gerald of his generation. Fortunately, unlike Uncle Gerald, Vern was promoted from special uncle to Grandpa shortly after he married Lori. They enjoyed years farming together with the help of their children. Coming full circle, Vern retired from farming to drive truck again, and he and Lori moved to the home place where Vern enjoyed his favorite role as husband, father and grandpa. Vern’s eight grandchildren were a special blessing to him. Vern and Lori provided a wonderful place for them on the farm, a place for food, fun, love and hugs.
Vern is survived by his wife Lori; his children Jody (Eddie) Flores, Jenny Feaker and Jayson (Kelly) Feaker; eight grandchildren, Kayla, Sierra, Carissa, Moriah, Christian, Careman, Hallee and Kole; his sisters, Shirely Stapleton, Arlie (Jay) Williams and Terresa (Mike) McCormack.
Nephews Nathan (Maggie) and Spencer Willems, Torin (Brittany) McCormack, Garrett (Jennifer) McCormack-Schmidt, and David Stapleton; nieces Megan (Amador) Zuazua and McKenzie McCormack; grand nieces and nephews and a multitude of cousins.
His uncle Don (Jeanne) Twedt of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Betty McClain of Houston, TX, and Charlene Thoreson of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Craig Stapleton.
