Obituary for Darrel Weber

Darrel Weber, 87, died peacefully on December 17th at Israel Family Hospice House of pulmonary fibrosis. Darrel was born on March 17, 1930 in rural Woodward, Iowa to William and Elva (Horton) Weber. The Weber and Horton families farmed in Dallas County where Darrel grew up, graduating from Woodward High School in 1947. He graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in electrical engineering. Darrel served his country in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Babenhausen Germany during the Korean conflict. He met the love of his life, Olive Mae Nail, at a Halloween party for Iowa Methodist nursing students and Iowa State college students. They were married on March 24, 1952 and were blessed with two sons. Darrel was employed as an engineer for Iowa Power and Light in Des Moines. In 1961 he was hired as chief electrical engineer for the City of Ames where he worked until his retirement in 1992. The Darrel F. Weber substation on George Washington Carver Road was designed by Darrel and given that designation to honor him as he retired. Darrel and Olive wintered in Casa Grande, Arizona for over twenty years, enjoying the climate and many friendships. In his younger days, Darrel farmed on weekends in addition to his regular job in Ames out of a great love for farming. He was incredibly hard working, repaired his own farm equipment, and taught his sons practical and mechanical skills. Darrel was a good storyteller and loved conversation with friends and family. Most recently he was able to enjoy the Thanksgiving meal with immediate family members who are very grateful to have had him in their lives.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Olive, of Ames; sons, Eric (Carol) Weber of Ames and Bruce (Kathy) Weber of Shawnee, Kansas; sister, Bonnie Anliker of Emmetsburg, Iowa; brother, Gary (Bertha) Weber of Woodward, Iowa; grandsons, Bill Weber, Joe Weber, Kevin Weber of Kansas City; granddaughter, Clara (Todd) Blauwiekel of Shawnee, Kansas. Great grandchildren, Amanda Weber and Theo Blauwiekel.

A memorial service will be held at Waterford Senior Living at a later date. Online condolences and photos may be left at
