Obituary for Michael F. Phillips

Michael F. Phillips, 72, of Fredericksburg, VA and formerly of Story City died February 27, 2017 in Fredericksburg, VA. Memorial services will be Saturday April 1, 2017 at 11 am at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will follow in the Story City Cemetery.
Mike was born on September 4, 1944 to Maurice and Sarah Phillips. He graduated from Story City High School and entered the ROTC in college at Iowa State and was active for26 years. He then taught many cadets in high school ROTC in Denton, Texas. Following the death of his wife Cheryl, he relocated to Fredericksburg, VA area to pursue a new position as an inspector of High School ROTC programs along the east coast.
Michael was a decorated and distinguished officer with Flying Cross, Bronze Star, B-Scaps Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished-Presidential Unit Citation, and Outstanding Unit with Valor, AF Organizational Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, AF Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, AF Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Legion of Merit and Kuwaiti Liberation Medal.
He served in support of operation Desert/Storm in Desert Shield Area.
Mike is survived by his brothers, Jim (Connie) Phillips and Steve (Wilda) Phillips; a sister, Marilyn (Joseph) Emond; eight nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Miscuk Phillips; and a granddaughter, Christine.
He was preceded in death by his patents; his step father, Irving Wierson; his beloved wife Cheryl and his only son, Kent.
